My name is Tommy Speziale. I grew up in Monterey Bay, California, surrounded by towering redwoods and the mighty Pacific. That deep connection to nature and a ranch-style upbringing sparked a lifelong dedication to the plant kingdom that has guided everything I do.

For over 25 years, I've lived with my hands in the dirt — cultivating plants, extracting them, and formulating with their compounds in every way possible. My journey began in 1999 in the golden era of California's cannabis underground. I grew on every scale, from garage grows to massive greenhouses and acres of outdoor giants. Beyond cannabis, I've cultivated a wide variety of food crops using advanced agricultural techniques including hydroponics and large-scale aquaponics. That aquaponics work also supported the raising and re-release of endangered native sturgeon.

These experiences naturally extended into international consulting, where I've handled product formulation, sourcing, and manufacturing contracts for hemp and functional plant-based products.

Working in the cannabis community also opened the door to the shamanic plant medicine world. For nearly 20 years, I have engaged in hundreds of sacred plant ceremonies across different traditions. I've grown, harvested, and prepared these medicines, sitting with them in ceremony as both student and facilitator.

The plants became my greatest teachers. They showed me that cannabis truly is a "gateway" — not to harder drugs as critics claim, but to deeper awareness, personal responsibility, and transformation. The same freedom the industry offered also exposed me to the risks of addictive patterns with alcohol and other substances. Thankfully, the plants helped me recognize and heal those destructive relationships. They provided healthier replacements and the clarity to make real change.

This journey revealed a simple truth: human beings are emotional creatures, guided by feelings. From the moment we wake up we look for a feeling — grab your phone, stumble to the coffee machine, or run before the sun comes up. The rest of the day we spend all of our time, money and energy, either chasing a feeling or running away from them with our daily actions. Those actions become habits, and those habits become rituals, whether you are aware of them or not.

Out of this understanding, Roots & Rituals was born.

To me, this is not a trend or a phase. Roots & Rituals is my entire life — rooted in the conviction that we have only just begun to understand the secrets hiding in the plants. Nutritional foundations, recreational options, medicinal and spiritual healing, they have it all.

Now based in South Florida, I bring this depth of experience to help bars and restaurants craft exceptional zero-proof functional drink menus, deliver the world's finest plant protein straight from the high-altitude Andes, and organize authentic plant medicine ceremonies with trusted practitioners.
