My name is Tommy Speziale. I grew up with an outdoor lifestyle surrounded by nature, always finding solace amongst the plants and animals. That connection never left — it only deepened.
I started in the cannabis industry in 1999 and was part of the underground scene through the entire transition from medical into the legal market. I've grown on every scale — from garage grows, big greenhouses, to acres of outdoor giants. For the past 25 years, I've lived a hands-in-the-dirt lifestyle, cultivating, extracting, and formulating with plants in every way possible. Growing in soil, hydroponics, and large-scale aquaponics, while learning how to cure, extract, distill, dehydrate, press, and freeze-dry to achieve the results we were looking for.
When they say cannabis is a gateway drug, they are right — except they were wrong about to what. Working and growing up in the golden era of the California cannabis community also led me deep into the shamanic plant medicine world. For nearly 20 years I've been involved with sacred plants — growing, harvesting, preparing, and sitting in hundreds of ceremonies from different traditions.
Working in the cannabis industry, however, also allowed a type of freedom that could be problematic to addictive personalities. Those decades of freedom did lead to an abusive use of alcohol and substances. Luckily, the plants also helped me understand these destructive relationships and assisted in changing them — in combination with the desire for change and the willpower to do what was necessary. The plants offered replacements for my habits. All these experiences taught me more about life than any class taken, podcast listened to, or outside advice heeded.
My takeaway is that human beings are emotional creatures. We are always guided by feelings. As soon as we wake up, we take action towards a feeling — grabbing our phones, stumbling to the coffee machine, or running at sunrise. Then for the rest of the day we spend all of our time, energy, and money trying to achieve a feeling or running away from one. We accomplish this with action, actions become habits, and habits become rituals — whether you're aware of them or not. And from this takeaway was the birth of Roots & Rituals.
To me, this is not a trend or phase. This is me sharing my lifelong relationship with the plant kingdom.
